Prince George's County enforces Maryland's smoke-alarm law under Subtitle 11. Every home must have alarms on each level outside sleeping areas, and battery-only units must be replaced with sealed 10-year tamper-resistant alarms with a hush feature.
Maryland's updated smoke-alarm law took full effect January 1, 2018 and is enforced in Prince George's County under County Code Subtitle 11, Section 11-258. At minimum, each home must have a smoke alarm on every level, located just outside the sleeping areas. When a 9-volt battery-only alarm reaches its 10-year life span, it must be replaced with a sealed, long-life 10-year battery alarm that is tamper-resistant and includes a hush feature. In rental housing the landlord must install alarms properly and repair or replace a defective alarm within 5 days of written notice. The County uses passive enforcement for owner-occupied homes, offering free alarms, but strictly enforces the law for apartments, condos, and commercial buildings.
Failure to install or maintain required alarms in multi-family and commercial buildings is strictly enforced under Subtitle 11 and can result in County fire-code citations and fines.
