The unincorporated county requires no permit for a household yard sale; the zoning resolution lists it as a permitted accessory use on your own residential lot, subject to duration and frequency limits. Cities and HOAs may add their own rules.
Sumner County's Zoning Resolution treats a yard sale of personal or household items from a residence as a permitted accessory use, so no county permit or license is needed to hold one on your own property. The allowance is conditioned: each sale may run no more than three days within a ninety-day window, and no more than four times a year. Merchandise should be your own household goods, not items bought for resale, which would cross into an unpermitted retail business. Cities such as Gallatin and Hendersonville, and many lake-area HOAs, set their own sale and sign rules.
Holding sales beyond the accessory-use limits, or running an ongoing resale operation, can trigger zoning enforcement as an unpermitted commercial use. City sign rules and HOA covenant violations are enforced separately.
