Ontario, CA Garage & Yard Sales: Garage Sale Permits (2026)

Residential garage, yard, and moving sales in Ontario are regulated under Ontario Municipal Code Chapter 5 (Business Regulations). The City does not require a paid permit or advance registration for casual residential sales, but the sales themselves are capped at three per calendar year per residential address, each lasting no more than two consecutive days, during daylight hours (typically 7:00 a.m. to sunset). Items offered must be used personal property of the household; reselling purchased wholesale goods, new merchandise, or operating a business from the home requires a Home Occupation Permit and a California Department of Tax and Fee Administration Seller's Permit. Multi-family HOAs may schedule community-wide sales that the entire community can participate in on the same weekend without counting against the individual address cap if authorized by the Community Services Department. Signs advertising the sale must comply with the Ontario Sign Code (OMC Chapter 9) and cannot be placed on utility poles, street trees, traffic signs, or public property. Violations are subject to administrative citations starting at 100 dollars.
