Birmingham generally bans any exterior sign or advertising for a home occupation: the Zoning Ordinance (No. 90-130) prohibits external evidence of the operation, with the only allowance being one magnetic vehicle sign no larger than four square feet. The Sign chapter additionally permits one non-illuminated building wall sign of no more than one square foot identifying an approved home occupation.
Birmingham's home-occupation rules are deliberately restrictive on signage. Under Title 1, Chapter 4, Article IV, Section 1.F.5 of the Zoning Ordinance, a home occupation 'may not display or create any external evidence of the operation of the home occupation, such as, signs or advertising of any kind, except that one magnetic sign will be allowed to be placed on vehicle associated with the home occupation, provided that it is no more than four square feet.' Separately, in the Sign regulations (Chapter 8, Signs Permitted for Single Family Dwellings), the ordinance provides that 'Each approved home occupation may have one non-illuminated building wall sign which does not exceed one square foot of sign face area and which identifies the name of the business.' In practice that means a home business in a Birmingham residential district may not erect freestanding yard signs, illuminated signs, or general advertising; the only on-premises sign allowed is a single non-illuminated wall sign of one square foot or less, plus a four-square-foot magnetic sign on a business vehicle.
Posting any prohibited sign or other external advertising for a home occupation - such as a yard sign, illuminated sign, banner, or wall sign larger than one square foot - violates the Zoning Ordinance's home-occupation and sign provisions and is enforced by Planning, Engineering and Permits and code enforcement through citation and orders to remove the sign.
