Summary
Unincorporated Jackson County bans on-premise advertising for home occupations except in AG and RR zoning districts, where a single 6-square-foot sign is allowed.
Except in the AG and RR zoning districts, no on-premise advertising for the home occupation shall be allowed. Window areas must not purposely or intentionally be used as display areas or to offer merchandise for sale. In the AG and RR Zoning Districts, a six (6) square foot sign advertising the home occupation shall be permitted. No home occupation sign shall be located within a street right-of-way.
11. In the AG and RR zoning districts, home occupations may be operated from accessory buildings. Except in the AG and RR zoning districts, all related activities shall take place entirely within the residential dwelling, except when the Director finds that such activity is similar to non-commercial activities normally associated with single family homes.
12. Except in the AG and RR zoning districts, no pedestrian or vehicular traffic shall be generated by the home occupation in greater volumes than would normally be expected in a residential area.

The Unified Development Code prohibits on-premise advertising for a home occupation in every residential zoning district except Agricultural (AG) and Rural Residential (RR). In those two districts a home occupation may display one sign of up to six square feet. Everywhere else, including RE, RS, RU and RO districts, no exterior sign, window display, or merchandise offer is allowed, and any permitted AG/RR sign still cannot sit inside a street right-of-way. This applies only to unincorporated Jackson County land. Kansas City, Independence, Lee's Summit, Blue Springs, Raytown and Grandview each enforce their own zoning codes and are not covered by this section.
