Prince William County prohibits signage for a home occupation. A home-based business may not display any exterior sign or other outward evidence that a business is operating at the residence.
Because a home occupation must be clearly incidental and secondary to the residential use and produce no change in the outward appearance of the dwelling, the county's home occupation standards permit no signage on the property. There may be no exterior evidence of the business, meaning no on-site advertising sign identifying the business at the home. Businesses seeking greater visibility or client traffic must instead qualify under the separate home employment category or relocate to a commercially zoned property, where the county's sign regulations under the Zoning Ordinance apply.
Displaying a business sign for a home occupation is a zoning violation; the Zoning Administrator may order removal and impose civil penalties for continued non-compliance.
