Placer County allows only a single residential identification sign for home occupations under § 17.56.120(E), cross-referenced to § 17.54.170(C)(2)(l). The full sign ordinance is § 17.54.170-17.54.200.
Under Placer County Code § 17.56.120(E), signs for a home occupation are allowed only as provided by Section 17.54.170(C)(2)(l) (Residential Identification Signs). The County's Sign Permit handout (Planning Services Division) confirms that the complete Placer County Sign Ordinance is County Code Section 17.54.170 - 17.54.200, and that in residential areas signs are tightly restricted: signs not exceeding 20 square feet in aggregate area are permitted in Residential Agricultural zones when they are related to an agricultural activity, and real estate signs are permitted on the property being advertised. Any free-standing sign over six feet tall, any electrically-illuminated sign, or any sign attached to a building requires a building permit, and a sign permit is required for most signs in residential zones. A sign permit (PLN application) is approved for two years, with possible extension under § 17.58.170(C). The Home Occupation Questionnaire (Question 13) requires the applicant to disclose any sign placed on the property; signs beyond the small residential ID sign are not permitted for a home occupation.
Erecting a sign without the required sign permit, or placing a sign larger or more illuminated than § 17.54.170(C)(2)(l) allows, is a zoning violation. Code enforcement may order sign removal and impose administrative penalties under Chapter 17.62; the business license may be revoked under § 5.08.200(B) if the home occupation no longer conforms to § 17.56.120.
