Showing ordinances that apply to Huntington, VA
Huntington is an unincorporated community (population 13,749) in Fairfax County, Virginia. Because Huntington is not an incorporated city, it does not have its own municipal code. Instead, Fairfax County ordinances apply directly to properties here. The signage rules rules below are the ones that govern your area.
Fairfax County prohibits all exterior signage for home occupations. Zoning Ordinance ยง4102 and Article 7 (Signs) explicitly bar any sign, placard, or display visible from outside the dwelling that identifies a home-based business. This includes window signs, yard signs, magnetic vehicle signs parked on the property, and illuminated displays. The home must appear indistinguishable from a purely residential dwelling.
Fairfax County's home occupation rules in Zoning Ordinance Article 4, Section 4102, combined with sign regulations in Article 7, impose an absolute ban on exterior business signage at residential properties operating home occupations. Prohibited signage includes: permanent wall-mounted signs; freestanding yard signs advertising the business; window lettering or decals identifying the business; painted business identification on the home, garage, or fence; magnetic or adhesive vehicle signage when the vehicle is parked on the property in view of the street; banners, flags, or temporary signs; and illuminated or electronic displays. This prohibition applies to both Class A and Class B Home Occupation Permits without exception. The rationale under Dillon's Rule and local zoning is that home occupations must preserve the residential character of the neighborhood โ any visible business identification is considered external evidence of a commercial use, which is grounds for permit revocation. Interior signage not visible from outside the dwelling is unrestricted. Commercial vehicles used for the business may be parked on the property but cannot display business identification visible to neighbors (though Virginia Code ยง46.2-1052 protects standard DOT-required commercial lettering on licensed commercial vehicles). Real estate agents, contractors, and others whose vehicles bear business names frequently receive citations when those vehicles are consistently parked in driveways. Violations are enforced by the Department of Code Compliance with $200 civil penalties escalating to $5,000 for continuing violations. Directional or address signs serving the residential use (street numbers, family name plaques) remain permitted.
