A permitted home business in unincorporated Nevada County may display one on-site freestanding or wall sign of no more than 4 square feet, and it may not be illuminated. Home businesses that are exempt from the permit requirement (in-home offices and arts-and-crafts fabrication) may not have any signage at all.
Nevada County Code Section 12.03.110(B)(9) limits signage for home businesses that require an Administrative Development Permit to one on-site, freestanding or wall sign with a maximum area of four square feet, which may not be illuminated. Section 12.03.110(B)(5) further requires that the business not alter the appearance of the premises, including but not limited to lighting, signage, and outdoor activity. Home businesses that are exempt from the permit requirement under Section 12.03.110(B)(1) - office uses conducted completely within a residence and arts and crafts fabrication conducted within the primary residence - are expressly prohibited from having signage under Section 12.03.110(B)(2). These standards were carried forward unchanged from former Land Use and Development Code Sec. L-II 3.11 by Ordinance 2533 (December 5, 2023).
Installing more than one sign, a sign larger than four square feet, an illuminated sign, or any sign for a permit-exempt home business violates Section 12.03.110 of the Nevada County Code. Violations are handled by the Code Compliance Division under Sections 12.05.210 and 12.05.220, with remedies including administrative citations, infraction or misdemeanor citations, and revocation of the home business permit.
