Indianapolis home occupations prohibit all exterior signage under Consolidated Zoning Ordinance Β§744-500. No visible evidence of commercial activity permitted in residential zones.
Under the Indianapolis-Marion County Consolidated Zoning Ordinance Β§744-500 (Home Occupations), home-based businesses may not display any exterior signage, window advertising, or product displays visible from outside the dwelling. No commercial vehicles with exterior advertising may be parked at the home on a regular basis. The home occupation must remain entirely incidental to residential use. There is no nameplate exception in most D-1 through D-5 residential districts. Violating the signage rule is itself grounds for revoking the home occupation's as-of-right status and requiring a zoning variance.
Sign removal order with 10-day compliance. Failure to comply: $250 to $2,500 per day. Loss of home occupation as-of-right status; variance required to continue.
