Nashua Land Use Code Sec. 190-20 limits home occupation signage to a single non-illuminated sign of 2 sq ft or less identifying only the occupant's name and address. Window signs, A-frames, banners, and freestanding monument signs advertising the home business are prohibited in all residential districts. Article X (Sec. 190-200 et seq. Signs) sets a separate sign permit requirement through the Department of Building Safety.
Sec. 190-20 of the Nashua Land Use Code expressly limits advertising at a home occupation to 'a single nonilluminated sign which shall not exceed two square feet in area' identifying only the occupant's name and address. Internal illumination, external floodlighting beyond residential character, neon, digital displays, and any animation are prohibited. The sign may be wall-mounted on the dwelling or freestanding next to the entrance — but freestanding sign placement may not encroach into the public right-of-way and must respect the dimensional setbacks of the underlying residential district (R-40, R-30, R-18, R-9, R-A, R-B, R-C) under Sec. 190-16. Article X (Signs), beginning at Sec. 190-200, requires a sign permit issued by the Nashua Department of Building Safety before a home occupation sign is installed. Article X prohibits in all residential zones: portable signs, A-frame sandwich boards, inflatable signs, roof signs, off-premises signs (billboards), and any sign that imitates traffic signage. The home occupant may use vehicle signage on the family vehicle but commercial-type vehicles (box trucks, wraps, equipment trailers) parked on the residential lot may violate Sec. 190-20's residential-character requirement and Sec. 190-160 (off-street parking). The Nashua Zoning Board of Adjustment may grant a variance under Sec. 190-180 for an oversized or illuminated sign only on a showing of hardship.
Sign violations under Sec. 190-20 and Article X are enforced by the Administrative Officer and Department of Building Safety with a cease-and-desist order requiring sign removal, civil penalties under NH RSA 676:17 of up to $275 per day for the first offense and $550 per day for subsequent offenses, and equitable relief through Hillsborough County Superior Court. Installing a sign without a permit is also a separate violation of Article X.
