A home occupation in Knox County may have one small business sign. It cannot exceed two square feet in area, and it cannot be located closer than twenty feet to the street right-of-way line. The business must not otherwise change the building's outside appearance.
Knox County Zoning Ordinance section 3.90 (Signs, billboards, and other advertising structures) governs signage. Business signs for home occupations shall not exceed two square feet nor be located closer than twenty feet to the street right-of-way line. A dwelling may also carry a nameplate showing only the name and/or address of the premises, the occupants, and any customary home occupation. Because section 4.90 bars any other change to the outside appearance of the building, the two-square-foot sign is the only visible advertising allowed for a home business in the unincorporated county.
An oversized or improperly placed home-occupation sign is a zoning violation and can be ordered removed by Code Administration.
