Sahuarita, AZ Landscaping Rules: Artificial Turf (2026)

Sahuarita has no ordinance prohibiting artificial turf on residential properties. In this Sonoran Desert community where water conservation is critical, synthetic grass is a common alternative to natural turf. Arizona Revised Statutes 33-1817 prohibits homeowners associations from banning water-efficient landscaping options, and many HOAs in Rancho Sahuarita and other master-planned communities have updated CC&Rs to explicitly permit artificial turf that meets appearance standards. Installation does not require a building permit in most cases, though grading or drainage modifications may trigger review under the town grading ordinance. The town recommends permeable base materials beneath artificial turf to allow rainwater infiltration, consistent with its stormwater management goals. Heat is a consideration in southern Arizona. Artificial turf surface temperatures can exceed 150 degrees Fahrenheit in direct summer sun, so many residents install it in shaded areas or use lighter-colored products with cooling technology. The Sahuarita area receives approximately 12 inches of rain annually, and artificial turf eliminates the need for the 50-plus inches of irrigation water per year that natural bermuda grass lawns require.
