Sahuarita, AZ Landscaping Rules: Weed Ordinances (2026)

The Sahuarita Town Code requires property owners to control weeds and maintain their lots in a condition that does not create a fire hazard, harbor vermin, or constitute a visual nuisance. In the Sonoran Desert climate, weed growth follows a seasonal pattern with winter annual weeds germinating after fall and winter rains and summer weeds growing rapidly after the monsoon season. Buffelgrass, an invasive species that has become a significant fire threat in southern Arizona, is a particular concern and property owners are encouraged to remove it aggressively. London rocket, tumbleweeds, and other common desert weeds must be controlled before they exceed standards set in the nuisance provisions. Vacant lots are subject to the same maintenance requirements as improved properties. Code enforcement officers patrol for weed violations and also respond to neighbor complaints. The Town may issue a notice of violation giving the property owner a specified number of days to bring the property into compliance. If the owner fails to act, the Town may abate the condition and bill the property owner for the cost. HOA communities enforce their own weed control standards, which are typically stricter than Town Code.
