Sahuarita, AZ Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

030(B) of the Sahuarita Town Code, titled 'Maintenance of Stock-Tight Fences,' sets the town's baseline rule for confining livestock and poultry and, in doing so, limits where barbed wire fencing is allowed. The section first requires that all livestock and poultry kept in any rural, residential, business, or industrial zone be confined by fences or other restraints strong and durable enough to prevent the animals from roaming at large, a requirement that applies town-wide regardless of zoning. It then narrows where barbed wire itself can be used: only in the RH, SR, and SR-2 zones, and on unsubdivided parcels zoned GR-1, SH, or R-1, may a stock-tight fence be built of barbed wire.

Everywhere else in a rural or residential zone, barbed wire is off the table entirely for fence construction. Even where it is permitted, the code caps the purpose: use of barbed wire in any rural or residential zone is limited to containment of livestock and poultry, so a homeowner cannot install a barbed-wire security fence around a residential yard even in a zone where barbed livestock fencing is otherwise allowed. Chain-link and electric fencing are not separately addressed in this general-regulations section; a landowner outside the livestock-confinement context follows the design and screening rules for the applicable zone instead of a town-wide chain-link restriction.
