Prince George's County actively supports composting. Through the PGC Composts program, the County offers weekly curbside collection of food scraps and yard trim, runs an Organics Composting Facility, and provides a residential drop-off center. Backyard composting is allowed within property-maintenance limits.
Composting is encouraged, not restricted, in Prince George's County. Under the PGC Composts program, every household with County trash and recycling service gets weekly curbside collection of food scraps and yard trim, collected Mondays year-round. Yard trim includes grass clippings, leaves, small branches, brush and seasonal Christmas trees, placed loose in a can, large paper yard bags, or the County-issued 32-gallon 'organics' cart; plastic bags are not accepted. Curbside limbs must be under 4 feet long and 3 inches thick and tied in bundles under 60 pounds. Larger loads go to the Brown Station Road Convenience Center in Upper Marlboro. Backyard composting is permitted; just keep the pile from becoming an odor or pest nuisance under Subtitle 13.
Composting is allowed. Problems arise only if a compost pile becomes a nuisance - odors, vermin, or overflow onto neighboring property - cited under the property-maintenance code. Yard trim set out incorrectly (plastic bags, oversized limbs) may not be collected.
