The City of Maricopa does not publish a numeric lawn-height limit. Instead, its nuisance and litter code prohibits weeds, brush, grass, or other vegetation growing to an 'unreasonable height' or in unreasonable amount, and Code Enforcement may abate overgrowth as a nuisance.
Unlike larger Valley cities that set an inch threshold, the City of Maricopa regulates tall grass through its general nuisance and litter provisions rather than a fixed height rule. Maricopa City Code 9.05.010 defines 'litter' to include 'any growth of weeds, brush, grass or other vegetable growth to an unreasonable height or in unreasonable amount,' and Chapter 8.20 (Nuisances) makes it unlawful to maintain such conditions on a property. Because Maricopa is a master-planned desert community, most front yards are desert-landscaped with decomposed granite rather than turf, so the practical issue is usually dead weeds and tumbleweeds rather than mowed lawns. Property owners and tenants are responsible for keeping their property free of weeds, filth, and debris at all times. When a complaint is received, a code enforcement officer inspects the property, and if a violation exists, a written notice and order to abate is issued with a correction deadline. Note: a separate 'six inch dried grass' rule that appears online belongs to Maricopa COUNTY, not the City of Maricopa, and does not govern city residents. HOA landscaping rules in master-planned communities are often stricter than the city minimum and are enforced privately.
Overgrown weeds or grass at an unreasonable height are a code-enforcement nuisance. After inspection, the city issues a written notice and order to abate with a correction deadline; if the owner fails to act, the city may abate the nuisance and bill the owner for the cost.
