On unincorporated residential parcels, grass may not exceed 12 inches. It's a declared nuisance under Kane County Code Chapter 15. Inside Aurora, Elgin, St. Charles, or any village, the city's own weed ordinance applies instead.
Kane County Code 15-2(1)(b) makes it unlawful "To allow vegetation defined as grass to exceed twelve inches (12") in height on a residential use parcel located within the county." "Grass" is defined in 15-1 as "All vegetative ground cover located within a yard excluding noxious weeds." Prairie plants are expressly excluded. This applies only to unincorporated land outside any municipality's corporate limits; incorporated cities and villages enforce their own turf-height rules. Complaints route through the Kane County Building/Health Departments, which issue a notice with a 5-30 day compliance window.
Declared a nuisance under 15-2; fine up to $500 per day (15-6), each day a separate offense. County may abate and bill the owner, with unpaid costs a tax lien (15-7).
