Union City's Weed Abatement chapter sets no numeric grass-height limit. Grass and weeds that grow tall enough to become a fire menace when dry, or are otherwise noxious, are a public nuisance the Fire Chief can order removed.
Union City Municipal Code Chapter 7.08 (Weed Abatement, Ord. 36-60) imposes no fixed lawn-height number. It defines weeds as plants that bear wingy or downy seeds at maturity, grow large enough to become a fire menace when dry, or are otherwise noxious, including grass and deleterious growth. All weeds on streets, sidewalks, or private property are declared a public nuisance. Every owner of improved or unimproved land must keep the parcel free of grass, weeds, dead trees, and refuse that may endanger neighboring property or residents' health and safety, and must clear the abutting sidewalk. A dry, neglected lawn or overgrown lot can be cited as a fire hazard even though no inch-measurement appears in the code.
When the Fire Chief finds a fire-menace condition, the City issues a written Notice to Clean Premises giving ten days. If the owner fails, the Fire Chief removes the vegetation and the certified cost becomes a lien (Ord. 36-60 §§33-43).
