Florida-Friendly Landscaping using Florida native plants is protected statewide under FL FS Β§373.185 and encouraged by Palm Beach County. PBC ULDC Article 14 awards landscape credits for native species and requires native vegetation in preserve areas.
FL FS Β§373.185(3)(b) provides that no local ordinance, deed restriction, or covenant may prohibit a homeowner from implementing Florida-Friendly Landscaping. PBC ULDC Article 14 incentivizes native plant use through pervious area credits, requires preservation of native upland habitat above defined thresholds, and lists prohibited Category I invasives. UF/IFAS Florida-Friendly Landscaping principles (right plant right place, water efficiently, fertilize appropriately, mulch, attract wildlife, manage yard pests responsibly, recycle yard waste, reduce stormwater runoff, protect waterfront) are recommended. Coastal native species such as sea grape, sea oats, cocoplum, gumbo limbo, live oak, and saw palmetto thrive in PBC. The Native Plant Society Palm Beach County Chapter offers plant lists and guidance. Mangroves along the Intracoastal and Lake Worth Lagoon are protected under FL DEP rules.
None for native plant installation. Removal of protected mangroves or natives in preserves triggers PBC ERM or FL DEP penalties.
