Fair Lawn prohibits residents from trimming, topping, or pruning trees in the public right-of-way without authorization from the Shade Tree Division and Borough Arborist.
Chapter 226 (Trees on Public Lands) reserves pruning of street trees and trees on public property to the Borough's Department of Public Works Shade Tree Division, in consultation with the Shade Tree Advisory Committee and Borough Arborist. Residents may not climb with spikes, top, or chemically spray public trees. Private property tree trimming is unrestricted unless the tree is deemed a public hazard, in which case the Property Maintenance Official may compel maintenance after written notice.
Fines up to $2,000, up to 90 days community service, possible jail up to 90 days for severe violations.
