Bergenfield Chapter 291 prohibits cutting, trimming, breaking, or otherwise injuring any living tree or shrub on public highways, parks, or public places without prior written permit from the Shade Tree Committee.
Chapter 291 of the Borough Code regulates trees on public property. No person may cut, trim, break, or otherwise injure any living tree or shrub on public highways, public rights-of-way, parks, or other public places within Bergenfield without first obtaining a written permit from the Shade Tree Committee. The Committee meets the first Monday of each month at 7:30 PM in Borough Hall. Residents requesting trimming or removal of a Borough shade tree write to the Shade Tree Committee at 198 North Washington Avenue or email dpw@bergenfieldnj.gov. The Committee may also order owners to remove trees deemed dangerous to public safety at the owner's expense.
Trimming a public tree without a Shade Tree Committee permit is a Borough Code violation subject to fines and restoration costs.
