No permit is needed to trim trees on your own land in unincorporated Nevada County, but the Hazardous Vegetation Ordinance mandates specific trimming: roadside strips kept clear to 15 feet high, tree limbs removed within 10 feet of chimneys or rooflines, and dead wood removed from trees near buildings.
Under Nevada County General Code Sec. G-IV 7.4(c), as updated by Ordinance 2477, owners must keep a 10-foot-wide strip beyond the driving surface of primary ingress-egress roads free of ladder fuels to a height of 15 feet, remove any tree portion within 10 feet of a chimney, stovepipe, or roofline, strip climbing vines from trees within the 100-foot defensible space zone, and keep trees adjacent to or overhanging buildings free of dead or dying wood. Sec. G-IV 7.4(G) further prohibits letting vegetation interfere with street or emergency vehicle access; a Public Official may summarily abate growth hindering emergency access under Health and Safety Code Sec. 14930 and Government Code Sec. 25845.
Failure to trim can trigger a Notice to Abate, administrative penalties of $100 to $1,300, infraction or misdemeanor prosecution, and County abatement billed to the owner; vegetation blocking emergency access may be abated without further notice.
