Routine pruning of trees on your own residential yard needs no county permit. But required landscape or street trees, and trees in Greenbelt Buffers or Conservation Areas, are protected — over-pruning that destroys them can trigger replacement under the Land Development Code.
For a tree in your private back or side yard, Manatee County states 'you do not need authorization to remove or replace' it, and routine maintenance pruning is likewise unregulated. However, trees installed as part of an approved landscape plan, county-required street trees, and trees within HOA-managed Greenbelt Buffers or Conservation Areas remain protected under Land Development Code Chapter 7. Excessive pruning that effectively destroys a protected tree is treated the same as removal and requires a permit and one-to-one replacement. Utility-line and hazard trimming should follow ISA/ANSI A300 standards.
Destroying a protected/required tree by over-pruning without a tree removal permit is an LDC violation; the county may require one-to-one replacement or cash-in-lieu payment and assess code fines.
