Mahwah restricts outdoor watering from May through September, prohibiting Sunday watering and enforcing odd/even address day rules.
Chapter 16 of Mahwah's code limits outdoor watering between May 1 and September 30 each year. During this period, watering is prohibited all day on Sundays. Even-numbered addresses may water all day on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, while odd-numbered addresses are assigned the alternate days. From October 1 through April 30, no seasonal restrictions apply unless a local water emergency is declared. New or expanded automatic lawn sprinkler systems must include a rain sensor or switch that overrides the irrigation cycle after adequate rainfall. During a Level 3 local water emergency, all outdoor watering is prohibited except for narrowly defined exclusions.
Violations of watering restrictions can result in fines and, during declared emergencies, escalated penalties. Failing to install a required rain sensor on new sprinkler systems may also trigger code enforcement action.
