Del Norte County's main weed ordinance targets tansy ragwort: County Code 7.40.50 makes it an infraction to let tansy flower within 150 feet of a property line bordering land that is tansy-free or being controlled. The County also uses California's weed-and-rubbish abatement law (Gov. Code 39560 et seq.).
Unlike inland fire-prone counties, Del Norte's wet coastal climate makes dry-grass weed-abatement less central, but the County does have a specific noxious-weed ordinance. The County Code addresses tansy ragwort (a plant toxic to livestock) in Chapter 7.40; Section 7.40.50, 'Spread of Tansy Deemed Infraction,' prohibits property owners from allowing tansy ragwort to flower on their property within 150 feet of property lines that border parcels which are either free of tansy or are being actively controlled for tansy. The County Agricultural Commissioner's office runs a Weed Management and Eradication program that looks for and controls invasive and noxious weeds along county roadsides and wildlands, giving highest priority to 'A-rated' weeds as defined by the California Department of Food and Agriculture. For broader weed and rubbish problems that create a fire menace or blight, the County relies on California Government Code Sections 39500 et seq. and 39560 et seq., the state weed-and-rubbish abatement statutes that empower counties to order removal and, if owners fail to comply, abate the nuisance and recover costs. Overgrown, vermin-harboring vegetation can also be declared a public nuisance under the County Code's nuisance provisions and pursued by the Code Enforcement Division. The Agricultural Commissioner can be reached at (707) 464-0878.
Allowing tansy to flower within 150 feet of a clean or controlled neighboring parcel is an infraction under County Code 7.40.50. Weed and rubbish that are a fire menace can be ordered abated under Government Code 39560 et seq.; if the owner does not comply, the County abates and charges the cost to the parcel. General overgrown-vegetation nuisances run through Code Enforcement's notice-and-citation process.
