Under Sec. 11:224, a bicyclist on a roadway must stay as near the right-hand edge as practicable and use due care when passing a standing or slower vehicle. Four exceptions let a rider leave the right edge: overtaking another bicycle or vehicle going the same direction, preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a driveway, avoiding a fixed or moving hazard, or approaching a spot where a right turn is authorized. The code defines a "substandard width lane" as one too narrow for a bicycle and a vehicle to travel safely side by side, which is itself grounds to move off the edge.

Sec. 11:220(c) extends every bicycle regulation in this chapter to a bicycle ridden on a public path set aside exclusively for bicycles, not just ordinary streets, and Sec. 11:221 gives cyclists the same rights and duties as motor vehicle drivers under Louisiana law except where this chapter sets a special rule. Sec. 11:222 requires cyclists to obey traffic signals, stop signs, and posted turn restrictions the same as drivers, with a dismount-and-walk option at a no-turn sign. These rules apply parish-wide wherever the City-Parish maintains the roadway or bike path.
