Where a bicycle lane runs alongside the roadway, a PED must ride in it, and may leave the lane only to pass another rider or avoid an obstruction blocking the lane. Where no bike lane exists, the device must be ridden as near the right side of the roadway as practicable, though the rider is not required to use the shoulder.
A rider may use a lane other than the right-hand lane only if that is the one lane available for the intended route. Riders must signal turns and stops by hand: raising the left arm to a square or extending the right arm horizontally for a right turn, extending the left arm horizontally for a left turn, and extending either arm downward to indicate stopping or slowing, though a rider does not have to hold the signal continuously if the hand is needed to control the device.
