Aircraft noise in Corpus Christi is federally regulated by the FAA. NAS Corpus Christi naval air station and Corpus Christi International Airport (CRP) generate significant flight activity. The city noise ordinance does not regulate aircraft in flight.
Corpus Christi is home to two major aviation facilities: NAS Corpus Christi (a Navy training base operating T-6 and T-44 aircraft) and Corpus Christi International Airport (CRP). Aircraft noise is regulated at the federal level by FAA regulations (14 CFR Part 150 and Part 36), not by municipal ordinance. Chapter 31 of the Corpus Christi noise code does not apply to aircraft in flight, which is consistent with federal preemption of aviation noise regulation. NAS Corpus Christi operates training flights throughout the week including some evening hours. The airport has an Airport Noise Compatibility Program. Residents near flight paths may experience elevated noise levels. Ground-based airport operations (maintenance facilities, ground support equipment) are subject to the general Chapter 31 decibel limits. Noise complaints about military aircraft should be directed to the NAS Corpus Christi Public Affairs Office. Civilian aircraft noise issues go through CRP Airport Administration.
Municipal noise ordinance does not apply to aircraft in flight. Ground operations exceeding 70/60 dBA thresholds may be cited under Chapter 31.
