Corpus Christi Code Section 31-3 sets 70 dBA daytime and 60 dBA nighttime limits measured at the receiving property. The Entertainment District allows 85 dBA. Sound is measured using ANSI-standard equipment.
Corpus Christi Code Section 31-3 establishes specific decibel thresholds. Daytime is defined as 8:01 AM to 11 PM Sunday through Thursday and 7:01 AM to midnight Friday and Saturday, with a 70 dBA limit. Nighttime covers 11:01 PM to 8 AM Sunday through Thursday, 12:01 AM to 7 AM on Saturday and Sunday mornings, with a 60 dBA limit. The Entertainment District has a special 85 dBA threshold at all times for sound originating from and received on property within the district. Sound measurements are taken at the property where the sound is received, not at the source. Equipment must meet American National Standards Institute specifications. Any sound exceeding the applicable dBA level is a violation of the chapter regardless of the type of source. Section 31-1 defines key terms including A-weighted sound level and sound level meter standards. The 10 dBA differential between day and night provides meaningful nighttime noise reduction for residential areas.
Each reading above the threshold constitutes a separate violation. Fine up to $500 per offense. Ongoing violations may be prosecuted as separate daily offenses.
