Aircraft noise at DFW is regulated federally by the FAA, not by Grapevine. The city lies under multiple DFW flight tracks and noise contours but cannot regulate overflights. Complaints go to the DFW Airport Noise Office.
Grapevine is directly adjacent to DFW International Airport, with residential and commercial areas located within the 65 DNL noise contour and under departure and arrival flight paths. Federal preemption under the Airline Deregulation Act and the Noise Control Act means the city cannot enforce decibel rules against aircraft operations. The FAA controls flight paths, altitudes, and operational procedures. Grapevine works with the DFW Airport Noise Compatibility Office (972-973-5579) which handles overflight complaints, disseminates noise contour maps, and runs the Community Environmental Committee. Residents near DFW can file complaints through the DFW WebTrak portal which logs each complaint against specific flights for FAA review. Homes within the higher DNL contours were eligible for the DFW sound insulation program in past years, with triple-pane windows, exterior door upgrades, and attic insulation provided at no cost to qualifying owners. Ground-based airport noise (ground power units, aircraft taxiing at terminals) falls partly under DFW's own operating rules. Grapevine does enforce ordinance rules against ground-based sources within city limits that mimic aircraft noise or use aircraft equipment improperly.
Federal preemption applies to flight operations. Ground-based noise violations handled as Chapter 18 offenses with up to 500 dollar fine.
