Camden County, NJ Noise Ordinances: Aircraft Noise (2026)

Camden County adopted its Noise Control Ordinance for Stationary Source by resolution on December 16, 1993, effective March 16, 2004. 2 limits the ordinance's reach to 'the control of sound originating from stationary sources within the limits of Camden County,' which is why aircraft in flight, an activity the FAA regulates, fall outside the county's direct authority. C. 7:29. 3 builds on that authority for airports specifically: the administrator 'shall consult with the airport proprietor to recommend changes in airport operations to minimize any noise which the airport owner may have the authority to control in its capacity as proprietor,' and must report on those efforts to the governing body, now the Board of County Commissioners.

Ground-based airport equipment, generators, ground power units, maintenance machinery, is not exempt from Article V's Table I sound-level limits, so a noise control officer can measure it at the nearest residential property line and issue a summons or an abatement order under Article IX if it exceeds 65 dBA by day or 50 dBA at night. An airport operator that cannot meet those limits may seek a variance from the administrator under Article VIII by paying a $200 processing fee and showing compliance would impose an unreasonable hardship without equal public benefit; an approved variance runs no longer than one year and can be revoked for a violation of its terms.
