Amplified music rules in Washtenaw County, MI — also called sound permit, PA system, or live music ordinances — set decibel limits, time-of-day restrictions, and when permits are required.
The county sets no amplified-sound rule. Ann Arbor prohibits operating any loudspeaker, sound amplifier or PA system between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. Non-commercial amplified speech is allowed 7:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m.
Amplified-sound limits in Washtenaw County are municipal, not countywide. Ann Arbor Chapter 119, Section 9:363(6), bans the operation or use of any loudspeaker, sound amplifier, public address system or similar device between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. if clearly audible past the property line. Section 9:365(3) permits non-commercial amplified speech between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.; vehicle-mounted loudspeakers need a City Council permit. Amplified sound also cannot exceed the Section 9:364 property-line caps (55 dB(A) residential at night). Ypsilanti and townships enforce their own amplified-noise limits.
Civil infraction: $50-$500 plus costs, escalating to $100 (second) and $200 (third) within two years; up to 240 hours community service.
