Amplified music rules in Los Angeles, CA — also called sound permit, PA system, or live music ordinances — set decibel limits, time-of-day restrictions, and when permits are required.
Amplified sound audible beyond 150 feet of the property line in a residential zone or within 500 feet of one is a violation under LAMC 112.01. Sound exceeding ambient levels by more than 5 dB at any neighboring occupied property is also prohibited. LAMC 41.57 separately bans loud and raucous amplified noise citywide.
LAMC Section 115.02 prohibits operating sound amplifying equipment without authorization. Sound may not be audible beyond 200 feet from the equipment and must not be loud, raucous, or unreasonably disturbing. No amplified sound is permitted within 200 feet of hospitals, schools, or churches while in session. Section 112.06 limits entertainment venues to 95 dBA at customer-occupied points, requiring conspicuous warning signs near each public entrance. In parks, amplifiers require a permit, musical instruments are prohibited between 10 PM and 7 AM, and no instruments may be played within 750 feet of residences.
All amplified sound violations are misdemeanors under LAMC Chapter XI. LAPD has primary enforcement responsibility. Entertainment venues exceeding 95 dBA without posted warnings face additional citations.
