Every vehicle in unincorporated Jefferson County must have a working, unmodified muffler. On roads posted 35 mph or less, most vehicles may not exceed 80 dB(A) (measured 50 feet from the lane center); cutoffs and bypasses are prohibited.
The Noise Abatement Policy requires a muffler in constant operation and bars cutoff, bypass, or similar modifications. On-road limits scale with vehicle type and speed: 80 dB(A) for most vehicles and post-1972 motorcycles at 35 mph or less (84 dB(A) above 35 mph), and 86-88 dB(A) for heavy vehicles over 10,000 lbs. Vehicles on private property may not exceed 78 dB(A). Colorado state law (CRS 42-4-225) independently makes a defective or modified muffler a traffic infraction.
County noise violation is a Class 2 Petty Offense ($30-$300). A modified or missing muffler is also a Class B traffic infraction under state CRS 42-4-225.
