Vehicles in motion may not exceed Table 2 limits (82 dBA for cars, 86 dBA for motorcycles at 40 mph or less, measured 50 feet away); modifying or removing a muffler to exceed these limits is prohibited.
City Code Sec. 66-206 sets maximum motor-vehicle sound levels measured at least 50 feet from the vehicle path. For a vehicle at 40 mph or less, a passenger vehicle may not exceed 82 dBA and a motorcycle 86 dBA; heavy vehicles (10,000+ lbs GVWR) may not exceed 86 dBA. Static tests apply too: a vehicle under 6,000 lbs (except motorcycles) may not exceed 95 dBA measured 20 inches from the exhaust. Sec. 66-207 bans muffler removal, puncturing, or modification that raises noise above these levels, and restricts refuse trucks 8 p.m.-5 a.m. in residential areas.
Misdemeanor under Sec. 66-140: fine up to the state maximum and/or up to 90 days jail. Modified or removed mufflers are separately prohibited under Sec. 66-207.
