In Collier County, charcoal and wood barbecues are barred within 600 yards of forest, grassland, or marsh. Under the Florida Fire Prevention Code, grills cannot be used on balconies or within 10 feet of multifamily buildings—single-family homes are exempt.
Collier's Fire Prevention Policy OPB 09-1 states, 'The use of open barbeques or barbeque pits utilizing charcoal or wood shall be prohibited within 600 yards of any forest, grassland, woods, wild lands or marsh area within Collier County,' a rule aimed at wildfire ignition. Separately, the Florida Fire Prevention Code (NFPA 1) prohibits charcoal or gas grills on balconies or within 10 feet of buildings other than one- and two-family dwellings, unless the structure is fully sprinklered. Single-family homeowners may grill on their own property. During a drought burn ban, grills may still be used for cooking if attended and clear of burnable material.
Barbecuing within 600 yards of wildland, or grilling on a multifamily balcony in violation of NFPA 1, is enforced as a fire-code violation by the fire marshal and code enforcement.
