For single-family homes, gas and charcoal grills are unrestricted. But under the adopted SC Fire Code, charcoal burners and open-flame cooking devices may not be operated on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction at apartments and condos, unless the building is sprinklered.
Horry County enforces the statewide 2021 SC Fire Code (IFC Section 308.1.4). One- and two-family dwellings are exempt, so backyard grilling at a house is fine. At multifamily buildings, charcoal burners and other open-flame cooking devices cannot be used on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction. Exceptions apply where the building, balconies and decks are protected by an automatic sprinkler system, and for small LP-gas devices whose container water capacity does not exceed 2½ pounds (about a 1-pound cylinder). This is why Grand Strand condo and apartment complexes commonly ban charcoal and full-size propane grills on balconies. Follow posted HOA and property rules too.
Fire officials can order unlawful balcony grills removed; repeat or hazardous violations at multifamily properties can bring fire-code citations and fines against the operator or owner.
