Under Virginia's Statewide Fire Prevention Code, charcoal and gas grills may not be operated on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction. Apartment residents may use only electric grills or LP-gas containers of one pound or less, unless the building is fully sprinklered.
Outdoor cooking in Prince William County follows Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code (SFPC) 308.1.4, adopted from the International Fire Code. Charcoal burners and other open-flame cooking devices may not be operated on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction. Exceptions apply where the building, balcony, and deck are protected by an automatic sprinkler system, or where the resident uses an electric grill or a device with an LP-gas container of one pound or less (camping-style). Detached single-family homeowners can grill in their yards away from the house. Management of multifamily buildings must notify tenants in writing of these limits.
The Fire Marshal's Office may order removal of prohibited grills and cite violations of SFPC 308.1.4; unsafe grilling can be abated as a fire hazard.
