Single-family backyard propane and charcoal grilling is unregulated by the county. But under the fire code, apartment and condo residents generally cannot operate grills on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction unless the building is sprinklered.
McHenry County sets no ordinance on home BBQ grilling; one- and two-family dwellings may grill freely, subject to nuisance-smoke limits. Multifamily buildings are governed by the International Fire Code, adopted and enforced by local fire protection districts. IFC 308.1.4 provides that charcoal burners and other open-flame cooking devices shall not be operated on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction. Exceptions: buildings, balconies, and decks protected by an automatic sprinkler system; LP-gas cooking devices with a container water capacity not greater than 2.5 pounds; and one- and two-family dwellings. Always keep grills clear of the house, deck rails, and overhangs.
Fire-code violations at multifamily properties are enforced by the local fire protection district; management may prohibit balcony grilling and fire officials can order removal.
