Crystal Lake Chapter 526 lists noxious weeds - burdock, ragweed, thistle, poison ivy, wild mustard and others - plus any unmanaged vegetation as nuisance greenery. Owners must remove it within seven days of written notice or the City abates the property and bills them.
Chapter 526 (Weeds and Nuisance Greenery Control) defines nuisance greenery to include burdock, giant and common ragweed, thistle, cockleburr, jimson, wild carrot, poison ivy, wild mustard, pigweed, lambsquarter, wild lettuce, curled dock, smartweeds, poison hemlock, wild hemp, and all other plant materials in an unmanaged, untended, or uncultivated state, including grass. The Director of Community Development issues a written abatement notice requiring removal within seven days of service. If the owner fails to comply, the City removes the growth by contractor and charges the owner. This complements the eight-inch height cap for ordinary grass and weeds.
City removal is billed at $250 for the first hour and $200 for each additional hour or part thereof. Violators are also fined under Chapter 248, with each day treated as a separate offense.
