Backyard smokers are treated as recreational cooking fires by SRCAA. They may burn only clean, natural (untreated) firewood, charcoal, pellets, propane, or natural gas. During air-quality or fire-danger burn restrictions, solid-fuel (wood/charcoal) smokers may be prohibited.
Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency counts backyard cooking fires, including smokers and barbecues, as recreational fires. Approved fuels are charcoal, natural gas, propane, manufactured logs/pellets, or firewood that is dry, clean, and natural (untreated) — never treated or painted wood, garbage, or yard debris. During an SRCAA air-quality Stage 1 restriction, all outdoor burning of solid fuel (wood, charcoal) is prohibited countywide, which reaches wood- and charcoal-fired smokers; gas/propane smokers are generally unaffected. During DNR seasonal fire-danger restrictions, solid-fuel outdoor fires may likewise be limited. Keep the smoker attended, on a noncombustible surface, and away from structures and overhanging vegetation.
Operating a solid-fuel smoker during an air-quality or fire-danger restriction can bring an SRCAA penalty; a fire that spreads can bring DNR enforcement.
