Under Virginia law an abandoned motor vehicle left unattended over 48 hours in violation of law, or on private property without consent, may be removed. Prince William County removes unattended vehicles left over 72 hours on private property on written complaint.
State law (VA Code 46.2-1200) defines an 'abandoned motor vehicle' as one weighing at least 75 pounds that is left unattended on public property for more than 48 hours in violation of a state law or local ordinance, or has remained more than 48 hours on private property without the owner's consent. Prince William County's own removal procedure (PWC Code 13-466, Article XVII) lets a property owner file a written complaint about a motor vehicle left more than 72 hours without consent; a law-enforcement officer may then have it removed to a designated storage area, with the complainant agreeing in writing to indemnify the County and pay removal costs.
Removed vehicles are stored and may be sold or disposed of if unclaimed; removal, storage, and disposition costs are charged to the vehicle or property owner.
