Unincorporated Sedgwick County allows outdoor storage of up to nine inoperable vehicles, but they must be screened from street and neighbor view. A vehicle abandoned on a public highway can be impounded after 48 hours under Kansas law K.S.A. 8-1102.
The Sedgwick County Nuisance Code (County Code Ch. 19, Art. II) governs inoperable vehicles on private property in unincorporated areas. The county allows outdoor storage of up to nine inoperable vehicles (or parts equal to nine), but requires them to be screened so they are not visible from ground level. An inoperable vehicle is one that cannot operate under its own power or is junked, wrecked, dismantled, discarded, or abandoned. Statewide, K.S.A. 8-1102 lets the agency with jurisdiction remove and impound a vehicle abandoned on a public highway after 48 hours.
Report unscreened or excess inoperable vehicles to MABCD Code Enforcement, (316) 660-9220; unabated nuisances may be abated by the county with costs assessed to the owner.
