Michigan state law, not a county ordinance, defines abandoned vehicles. Under MCL 257.252a, a vehicle left on public property for at least 48 hours is deemed abandoned and may be taken into custody by police.
Abandoned-vehicle handling in Genesee County follows the Michigan Vehicle Code. MCL 257.252a defines an abandoned vehicle to include one that has remained on public property for not less than 48 hours, or one on private property without the owner's consent. A police agency may have such a vehicle taken into custody. Under MCL 257.252d, police may also remove a vehicle 'parked or standing upon the highway in such a manner as to create an immediate public hazard or an obstruction of traffic.' Report abandoned vehicles to your local police or the sheriff; on county roads, notify the Genesee County Road Commission.
Vehicle is taken into custody and may be sold; owner owes towing and storage costs. Failure to reclaim leads to forfeiture under MCL 257.252 procedures.
