McLean County, IL Parking Rules: Commercial & Oversized Vehicles (2026)

Section 350-38G, the use limitations subsection of the C Commercial District rules, generally requires business, storage, servicing and processing to be conducted inside completely enclosed buildings, then carves out specific exceptions. One of those, Section 350-38G(3)(c), addresses the parking of trucks as an accessory use when used in the conduct of a permitted commercial use: such parking is limited to vehicles of not over one and one-half ton capacity whenever the parking is located within 150 feet of an R-1 Single-Family or R-2 Two-Family Residential District boundary line.

Outside that 150-foot residential buffer, the code does not impose this same tonnage cap on accessory truck parking in the C District. The same subsection also sets related buffers for nearby uses: outdoor storage accessory to a commercial use cannot occupy more than 20% of the gross lot area and needs site plan approval from the Director of Building and Zoning, and a solid or semisolid fence, hedge or wall between six and eight feet high with at least 70% density is required adjacent to any residential district under Section 350-38G(6), unless a street or alley separates the properties.

The Zoning Board of Appeals may also limit hours of operation for a C District use under Section 350-38G(5) to preserve the character of nearby residential neighborhoods. These rules govern only unincorporated county commercial land; Bloomington and Normal enforce their own separate commercial vehicle parking rules within city limits.
