Unlike many western states, Illinois and Kane County do not run a standardized residential colored-curb system (red/yellow/green/blue) that homeowners maintain. On public streets, curb and pavement markings are the responsibility of the road authority, city or village, or the county highway department for county roads, and are governed by the Illinois Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and the Illinois Vehicle Code. A private resident may not paint a public curb (for example to reserve space or mark 'no parking'); do so only with the road authority's approval. Disabled and fire-lane markings are official-only.
Unauthorized marking or defacing of public roadway/curb is enforced by the municipality or county highway authority; painted markings by residents carry no legal parking effect.
