Abandoning a vehicle is unlawful statewide under the Illinois Vehicle Code (625 ILCS 5/4-201). It is illegal on any highway, or on private/public property in public view (other than your own land). A vehicle abandoned on private property may be removed by police after 7 days.
Illinois handles abandoned vehicles under 625 ILCS 5/4-201. Subsection (a) makes abandonment 'of a vehicle or any part thereof on any highway in this State... unlawful,' and subsection (b) extends the ban to private or public property in public view, except on the owner's or bailee's land. Once abandoned on private property, a law enforcement agency with jurisdiction is authorized to remove the vehicle 'after a waiting period of 7 days or more.' In unincorporated Kane County, the sheriff enforces this; junk/inoperable vehicles on your own property are separately regulated by county nuisance code Sec. 15-2(p).
Unlawful abandonment is penalized under 625 ILCS 5/4-214; the vehicle is subject to towing and disposal, with costs charged to the owner.
