St. Michael Code Sec. 155.031 requires residential driveways to be located at least 5 feet from a side property line and not exceed 30 feet in width within the public right-of-way (25 feet on cul-de-sac lots). All driveways from the public road to the garage must be surfaced with brick, concrete, or bituminous asphalt.
Sec. 155.031 (Landscaping and Screening / Driveway Standards) sets the basic geometry for residential driveways. The 5-foot side-yard setback prevents driveways from running directly along the property line. The 30-foot maximum width applies to the apron in the boulevard / right-of-way; on cul-de-sac (pie-shaped) lots the boulevard width drops to 25 ft to preserve street frontage greenery. The hard-surface requirement (brick, concrete, or bituminous) eliminates gravel residential driveways inside the city limits. Driveway aprons cross the city boulevard and require a building permit to install or widen. Decorative landscaping strips of 2-3 feet are permitted next to a residential driveway.
Driveways constructed without a permit or exceeding the width or setback rules are zoning violations. Enforcement is via Sec. 10.99 β misdemeanor with up to $1,000 fine and 90 days. The city may require removal or modification to bring the driveway into compliance.
