Sarasota County does not impose a countywide mandate requiring EV charging spaces in residential development; charging is voluntary and supported through the ChargeUP! rebate program. Home EV charger installation follows the Florida Building Code and county electrical permitting.
There is no unincorporated Sarasota County ordinance forcing homeowners or standard residential projects to install EV charging stations or reserve EV-only parking. The county instead promotes EV adoption through its ChargeUP! rebate program for businesses, nonprofits, and governments, and installs public chargers at county facilities. A residential Level 2 home charger requires an electrical permit and must meet the Florida Building Code and NEC. Where charging spaces are provided, Florida Statute 316.1576 restricts non-EVs from parking in designated charging spaces. Incorporated cities may adopt their own EV parking rules.
Unpermitted electrical work is a code violation subject to stop-work and fines. Blocking a marked EV charging space is enforced under state law FS 316.1576.
